As a parent, I first encountered Miss Delightful when my kids were 2 and 5 at a backyard party for grown ups and kids. She was pure magic and we were smitten. When we arrived, she was holding court with 20 rapt kids. When we left, she had tripled her numbers and ensnared the grown ups as well.
Through her stories and song, contagious laughter and invitation to play, Miss D invokes a world where people are kind and connected, where magic and just the right amount of mischief reign.
As a filmmaker, when I was asked to do a film for Sesame Street about fun, inclusion and diversity, my first thought was that it needed to include Miss Delightful. We joined her at another backyard party to shoot her quick cameo and, of course, ended up staying for storytime.
It’s been almost 10 years since I first met Miss Delightful, and her songs and stories have never left my head. My now almost 13 and 16 year old kids still brush their teeth properly, respect other people’s property and privacy and demand bun and cheese every Easter (politely!).
The beauty in small details are what make up the bigger picture of life. Through the curation and sharing of her own stories, Denise Taylor as Miss Delightful creates a world where everyone is welcome and everyone’s story fuels her own. It has been a beautiful world to be a part of.
